Where is Hendersonville?
Hendersonville is located in Sumner County, about 19 miles north of the Nashville city center. Depending on traffic, it’s about a 25-minute drive into the city via I-65.
The Cumberland River runs the entire length of Hendersonville’s southern border, including the manmade Old Hickory Lake. The city is bordered by Gallatin/Peytona to its east and Goodlettsville to its west.

The History of Hendersonville:
Hendersonville is an old city, but its notoriety and cultural relevance in Tennessee are relatively new. Unsurprisingly, the first famous resident in the area was named William Henderson. He helped settle the town and served as local postmaster before his death in 1807.
Throughout the 1800s, Hendersonville remained an important trading post, especially for farmers who lived to the north of the Cumberland River and preferred not to venture all the way into the busy city of Nashville to conduct business.
In the 20th century, however, everything changed for Hendersonville. In 1952, the Army Corps of Engineers began building the Old Hickory Lock and Dam, a hydroelectric power plant on the Cumberland River on the southeast side of Hendersonville.
The project resulted in several smaller lakes and ponds near the Cumberland to be flooded together, creating Old Hickory Lake, a reservoir named after Tennessee native President Andrew Jackson. The new, perfectly calm lake captured the imagination of Tennessee locals, and Hendersonville quickly became an outdoor recreation mecca for the state’s rich and powerful.
With the explosion of the Nashville country scene in the 1960s and ‘70s, Hendersonville became the home to many of the music industry’s biggest stars. Johnny and June Carter Cash, Roy Orbison, and Conway Twitty were all among the names who made Hendersonville home at one point.
Hendersonville’s status as the home of the stars continues today, as Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, and other musicians, athletes, and entertainers continue to make the city a destination for Middle Tennessee’s most famous faces.
That history of celebrity and sophistication doesn’t mean Hendersonville is a stuffy or formal place whatsoever. In fact, part of what gives the city its unique charm is that it still feels like a tight-knit American community where people are focused on living life to its fullest and having fun.
