History of Murfreesboro, TN

In 1811, when Murfreesboro was appointed the new location for the county seat in Rutherford county, it was just 60-acres of land that belonged to a man named Captain William Lytle.

Murfreesboro was originally named Cannonsburgh for one month, before changing the name in light of Captain Lytle’s request. Murfreesboro, Tennessee was officially recognized as a city in 1817 by the state legislature, and held the capital of Tennessee until 1826 when Nashville was renamed as the state capital.

Murfreesboro, Tennessee began as a mainly agricultural community. The main crops were cotton, corn and tobacco. After the civil war though, Murfreesboro began to transform to a more industrial and manufacturing community. Since that time, there has been a 53.2% rise in the population from 44,000 in 1990 to 68,000 in 2000, to now over 140,000 residents.

By 1853, Murfreesboro was the home of three universities and several different academies. Due to the civil war, education struggled until the early 1900s when it began to regain momentum. Now, Murfreesboro has been named the Most Liveable Town and is the 10th fastest growing city in the state of Tennessee.
