The History of Brentwood:
Brentwood, TN is a relatively new community that was incorporated just 50 years ago. With that said, the area still has a very rich history.
After the Revolutionary War, the US government gifted much of what is now Brentwood to their victorious soldiers. Those pioneers moved to Middle Tennessee in the 1790s and began farming the land.
Like much of the greater Nashville area, Brentwood was a prosperous community around the time of the Civil War, but many of its farms were shut down, destroyed, or converted for military use during the war, decimating the local economy.
Between the 1870s and 1920s, much of Brentwood was falling into ruins, but local community members and investors who appreciated the region’s specific charm began restoration efforts that saved many of the city’s oldest and most important structures.
The construction of I-65 in the late 1950s and early ‘60s changed everything, though. With Brentwood now highway-adjacent and an easier drive than ever to Nashville, Decatur, or Birmingham, developers began envisioning the area as an upscale suburban community.
Between 1960 and 1970, the city population exploded from barely 1,000 people to about 3,400. Brentwood incorporated in 1969 in order to provide infrastructure and establish a public water district to support continued development.
Throughout the ‘70s, Brentwood continued to evolve into a modern city. It added a police department, water treatment plant, and a city government with 15 full-time employees. By 1980, the population had grown to nearly 9,500 and Brentwood was officially on the map.
In recent decades, the community has continued to grow, both in terms of population and commitment to providing residents with excellent services. Brentwood currently maintains a wholesome suburban feel with all the conveniences of modern living and all the natural beauty the Volunteer State has to offer.
