Columbia, Tennessee is the county seat of Maury County and is located about 45 mins south of Nashville and about 75 miles north of Huntsville.

History of Columbia, TN

When Columbia was incorporated in 1817, it was four blocks laid on the south bank of Duck River. Duck River is one of the largest, most biodiverse rivers that runs entirely within the state’s borders. According to The Nature Conservancy, Duck River holds more species of fish than all of Europe’s rivers combined. 

The downtown district is one place that brings the community together. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 for its Victorian and mid 19th century architecture. Columbia was also home to the 11th president of the United States, James K. Polk. Visitors can take a guided tour of the ancestral home of Polk at the President James K. Polk Home & Museum. A few of Polk’s accomplishments include expanding the borders of the United States to the Pacific Ocean, issuing the first postage stamp and commissioning the Washington Monument.
